With Textures-Finally

The simpler textures are finally done. I need to place the roof back down now and begin adding signage. At the start of this project my aim was to create a building for study, like the market hall or the main college campus. Considering everything that I've done, I feel for the amount of detail that I have tried to include (even though it may not have worked) I may have been optimistic about create a full building. I think that just having the first floor and then signs stating what could and/or would be on the other floors shows that I have thought  about it. I have wanted a garden area in my design and despite not following it though or making much mention of it, I think if I had created a garden area, I would have become distracted from the main focus of the artist study areas.
Below show the idea that I was thinking of when I was originally adding textures to the pods. The blue feature wall was added to make the surroundings visually appealing as the limited brown palette made it feel like the surroundings were dull and unimaginative.

Below are the images that I have placed in my own model. These images are my own which I included into my model to make it visually more interesting during the walk-through.

Texture Issues

The last week I was working on my project I encountered issues with my textures, I had spent a whole day (9am to about 10pm) give or take an hour or two adding textures. Everything onscreen looked fine until I changed the preview mode to texture mode instead of solid. It was at this point that I realised I wasn't adding the textures properly. At this point I don't know what I was doing wrong. All I know is I was until 1am trying to correct everything and add textures where I could.

Above show the screenshot when I was in solid mode. Apart from the individual artist pods texture, everything here appears as I wanted it to. Wood panels on the walls, correct wood used in the kitchen tables and chairs and the correct textures of tiling used in the bathroom.

This screenshot in texture mode however shows the truth to my textures, the artists pods in this view are correct, so I was never worried about how they looked in solid mode but everything else had not appeared properly. I don't quite know what went wrong but if I don't have time to correct it all before assessment then I shall simplify it and add colours like I have done on the artist pods.

Character and the Roof

So a while ago  I was having issues with adding a player character as I didn't have the option to change one of the properties to an actor. I didn't focus on this issue as at the time I was still heavily reliant on moving things from a top view perspective, it is also easier to navigate the building when I don't have to zoom in to avoid looking at a wall or ceiling.
Luckily Gary suggest importing the player and controls and the camera from the Bunker blender files that are included in the tutorial disk. I did this and when I went to actually use it everything seemed fine.

Below are some screenshots showing the hexagon roof that I will be using. The brown colour will be kept as well. For my model I don't want to stick with white walls and plain white or tiled floors like so many educational places of study provide in artistic scenes. I chose the brown colour because it is dull enough that it doesn't offend anyone but the shades also provided a nicer balance for the lights, I think it makes the environment feel warmer. I will probably have to add some more colour into it though, such as a feature wall or giant ink splats-they are rather appealing to me at the moment.

The ceiling for the main individual artist study areas are made up of hexagons. If this building was going to be only one floor then some of the hexagons would be transparent windows allowing natural light to come through. The individual study pods do have transparent roofs though as I thought it would allow some light from the hall windows to come through.
